Jaan R. Freeman was the Artistic Director of his Freeman Repertory  Dance Company from 1989- 2004. The company was known for its global and multicultural themes and music. Freeman grew up and studied on scholarship in

New York City

at the Mary Anthony Dance Studio, Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, New York State School of Dance and with legendary and original Graham dancer Yuriko. Freeman studied under master teaches such as: Dudley Williams of (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), Carolyn Adams and Ruth Adrian of (Paul Taylor), Ethel Winter, Bertram Ross, Steve Rooks, Stuart Hodes, Penny Frank and Deborah Zall (Graham Company) among others.

Freeman’s career of modern dance spans two decades performing with with: Battery Dance Company, Murray Louis Project, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, Martha Graham Ensemble, and toured with Dance Consort: Genius of Charles Weidman. Jaan has performed in the historical modern dance work of: Doris Humphrey’s “With My Red Fires” and Charles Weidman’s “Lynch Town ” and “Fables”. He also performed Jose Limon’s Concerto Grosso directed by Nina Watt and Risa Steinberg along with the choreography of Martha Graham. Freeman was a member of the Alexander’s Touring Musical Theater Company from 1986-1990 performing in their production of Guys and Dolls and Pajama Game.

 Freeman has performed at the Kennedy Center , Brooklyn Academy of Music, Lied Center of Nebraska, Madras Music Academy , NJPAC, Asia Society and Carnegie Hall among other celebrated venues. Abroad, Freeman has taught modern dance in every major city in India as well as Sri Lanka -since 1997 and toured Sri Lanka , Poland and India . Freeman was in the original 1995 production of “Purush: Expressions of Man” which highlighted male dancers from India and the USA and was in the 1997 tour of “Songs of Tagore”, both presented by the Battery Dance Company. Abroad he has performed as a guest artist with; Rita Ganguly’s Kalardharmi of New Delhi and the Deepasikha National Dance Theater of Sri Lanka.

Freeman was  a former teaching artist of the Battery Dance Company’s Artist in residence program in the NYC public schools.He was in residence  at George Washington, H.S. and  Dewitt Clinton , H.S.

Freeman draws from the movement vocabulary of Graham and Horton Techniques and adds the dramatic and theater aspects of his Bharata Natyam and Musical Theater background. His class varies from the beginners’ class through the advance professional level. His classes are informative, bold, kinetic and uplifting.

Freeman’s choreography:

He is not so much on telling a story but more on creating a mood, taking the audience on an emotional journey through time and space.
